Running a fun, engaging classroom activity in the UAE doesn't have to cost a fortune. Whether you're a nursery teacher in Dubai looking for fresh ideas, or a parent recreating the classroom experience at home, these six activities are creative, hands-on, and all come in under AED 40 per child.
We've kept each activity simple enough for nursery and KG children (ages 3–6), mess-manageable for indoor UAE settings, and genuinely engaging — not just busy work. Let's dig in.
Fill a shallow plastic tray with kinetic sand, dried lentils, or rice — all widely available at supermarkets across the UAE — and hide small objects inside for children to discover. Give each child a spoon, a small cup, and a magnifying glass. The goal? Dig, sort, and describe what they find.
For ages 3–6, sensory play is one of the most powerful learning tools available. It builds fine motor skills, vocabulary, and focus — all without a single screen in sight. You can theme the bin around whatever topic your class is exploring: ocean animals, farm life, or even miniature plants and seeds.
Collect a handful of leaves, flower petals, or even kitchen herbs like mint (easy to find at any UAE supermarket). Children brush watercolour paint directly onto the leaf or petal, then press it onto white cartridge paper to reveal a natural print. Each one comes out completely unique.
This activity teaches children to observe shapes, textures, and patterns in nature — skills that map directly onto early science and art learning. It's also beautifully calm, making it a great mid-morning activity when energy levels need settling.
Making playdough from scratch is the activity itself — not just the outcome. Mix flour, salt, water, oil, and food colouring together and let children knead, squish, and shape their own batch. The ingredients cost almost nothing, and the sense of ownership children feel over something they made themselves is hard to replicate.
Once made, extend the activity: can they roll a snake? Build a nest? Shape a number or letter? For nursery and KG children, playdough is a brilliant tool for early maths, creativity, and hand strength — all at once.
This is hands-down the activity with the longest lasting impact. Each child gets their own Kids Garden DIY Grow Kit — complete with a coco peat soil disc, seeds, a pot, and a spray bottle. They mix their own soil, plant their seeds, water them, and take the whole pot home.
Choose from Basil, Mimosa (the magical "sensitive plant" that reacts to touch), or Cherry Radish — all designed to grow well indoors in the UAE climate. What makes this activity special is that it doesn't end when the bell rings. Children take it home, continue watching it grow, and come back to class with something to share.
For schools running a holiday project, this pairs perfectly with our School Holiday Gardening Project — where children use the Plant My Day Journal to track their plant's progress over 14 days. And if you're new to gardening in the UAE, our Guide to Gardening in the UAE is a helpful starting point for teachers and parents alike.
Give each child a plain paper bag, some googly eyes, coloured paper scraps, glue sticks, and markers. Their mission: create a character. It could be an animal, a superhero, a talking vegetable — whatever their imagination produces. Then, once the puppets are dry, pair children up and give them two minutes to make their puppets "talk" to each other.
This simple activity packs in an extraordinary amount of learning: fine motor skills, creative thinking, storytelling, and early drama. For nursery and KG children, puppet play is also a wonderfully safe way to express feelings and build confidence speaking in front of others.
Set up a simple "science station" with small cups of red, blue, and yellow water (coloured with food dye) and a set of pipettes or small spoons. Children predict, mix, and record what happens. What colour does red and blue make? What about yellow and blue? Can they make brown? Can they make black?
For 3–6 year olds, this is pure magic. It introduces the basics of scientific thinking — predict, test, observe — in a completely hands-on way. It's also one of the most replayable activities on this list: children will ask to do it again and again.
💡 A note on budget: All costs above are estimates based on typical UAE supermarket and stationery store prices. Buying in bulk for a full class will almost always bring the per-student cost down further — especially for the Grow Kit, where school and nursery bulk orders are available directly through Kids Garden.

Some of the most memorable classroom moments happen with a bag of rice, a pot of paint, or a tiny seed. In the UAE, where schools are full of bright, curious children, the challenge is rarely budget — it's finding activities that genuinely hold their attention and leave them with something real.
